Neglect is a broad word and can refer to many things. Many foster children are placed into care because they are not being fed or living situations are not ideal. Neglect is also seen in abandonment where children are left for long periods of time without a parent’s guidance. “Sometimes a birth parent’s decision to not seek medical attention for a child can put a child’s health in danger. These cases may be considered medical neglect and grounds to place a child in foster care.”
Practically speaking, when a child comes into foster care because of neglect they come empty handed. We have had children come with all of their possessions in a garbage bag. These children do not have adequate clothing. They have no concept of personal hygiene. Many have never slept on a real bed. They tend to be voracious (albeit picky) eaters. For those children who have been abandoned, it takes much time, love, and patience to gain their trust.
Neglected children need a lot of loving. Foster parents who are able to gain the trust of these children see the transformation that comes when they open up. Often times these children are suprises. They can be highly intelligent, possess incredible athletic or musical ability, and so many other things if they are given the opportunity.
How are you going to love on these children? Are there ways you can provide opportunities for them to heal and have hope in their lives? With this information, how are you going to Live the Gospel by Loving the Fatherless?
