We love to hear stories of young people seeing needs in the foster care community and doing something to meet those needs. Every Christmas season there seems to be toy, clothes, or food drives to benefit foster children and families. In our own community, a young lady decided to do something a little different: collect suitcases for foster children.
Gift of Hope was created by Lexie Deavers. Lexie has a unique foster care experience as her parents were foster parents. She was able to welcome other children into her home and love on them as best she could. One of the things she noticed was that foster children often came into the home with all of their belongings in a trash bag. Recently, she heard that Chilton County has over 140 foster children and DHR does not have suitcases for all of them. Lexie knew something needed to be done so she said, “Let me do this!”
Lexie had a desire to Love the Fatherless by meeting a simple need. She put the need out on social media and the community responded well! 56 suitcases and bags were donated and delivered to DHR to be given to foster children. Lexie will continue collecting bags and suitcases with the goal of 140 collected items. She also plans to collect more items for Valentine’s Day.
